City drops appeal of County area structure plan

The City of Grande Prairie is no longer appealing the County’s Correction Line West Area Structure Plan. City council made the decision Monday night, as Mayor Bill Given says it would rather focus its energy on updating and creating new agreements.

“In the coming year, the City and County will begin developing updated land use planning and delivery of service agreements as required by provincial legislation. Getting to the work of an updated Intermunicipal Development Plan and the development of an Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework is in the best interest of our region.”

The area structure plan proposes light industrial use for land just west of Sunrise Estates, three kilometres south of Grande Prairie. The city felt it exceeded the amount of development that was supposed to happen in the area as laid out in the Intermunicipal Development Plan.

A notice of appeal was submitted to the Municipal Government Board on August 14th. Staff will now be responsible for putting a stop to that process.

A mediator will be brought in to help start Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework discussions on December 11th. The province has mandated that all municipalities that share a common boundary must have one by 2020.
