The Grande Prairie Curling Centre’s lounge will now be known as the Top of the House Lounge. City council has approved the name change, which General Manager Nicole Shirvell says they’re hoping people will see it as a place to eat and drink even if they’re not curling.
“We’re looking at this as another revenue stream to help support the centre so that we can continue on and have curling in Grande Prairie for a long time. It actually gives us the ability to market it and to promote it. It just opens a lot of doors for us so we’re just extremely excited that the city approved the name.”
The city-owned facility has undergone many changes in the last few years. Renovations have been done to the lounge, kitchen, locker room and downstairs washroom, new management was hired and the centre now has a new chef. Shirvell says the name will help to separate the club from the lounge which she hopes will attract new visitors year-round.
“It’s almost like a mix of the two. Downstairs we have this awesome curling centre but then we also want to be able to appeal to the public that doesn’t necessarily curl.”
The Top of the House Lounge is located above the curling rink and can seat 225 people.
