The Alberta Government has provided the City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Police Service an additional two million dollars towards the end stage of its transition.
On Wednesday, October 21, the Grande Prairie Police Service officially assumed responsibility for policing in the city, finishing it’s nearly two year-long transition.
Included in the transition, Grande Prairie City Council chose to renovate the City on 99th building, to help make it the city’s emergency dispatch centre.
During an announcement made by Mike Ellis, on Wednesday, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services announced that the provincial government will be providing the city and police service with an additional two million dollars.
“It’s going to help with the dispatch centre, which is really operational as of 0600 this morning [Wednesday]. This is not just a dispatch centre for law enforcement, but a dispatch centre for fire as well.”
The dispatch centre will help dispatch first responders in Grande Prairie and surrounding areas.
“This truly is a state of the art facility, this is going to be a huge asset for up here in northwestern Alberta.”
After the two million dollars is accounted for, the provincial government provided a total of nearly 19 million dollars towards the transition.
