Treaty 8 Sovereign Nation is hopes to build mixed-income affordable housing project in Grande Prairie.
Officials with the treaty say that they are looking to acquire two different lots in the Smith neighbourhood, right next to Keyera Place.
One of the lots is lot 4, and is owned by the provincial government. The second lot is lot 6, owned by the city.
Officials say if they get transferred both lots, they would be able to develop up to 63 town houses. Out of the 63 potential units, options range as high as a four bedroom suite.
“Combining both lots would allow for a larger mixed income affordable housing development,” said Treaty 8 CAO Jamie Koe.
If the treaty cannot acquire lot 4, officials plan to down-scale the project to 24 units.
The treaty has already talked with the provincial government about lot 4, but nothing is official.
The project would be funded from multiple different sources of government funding.
When the presentation was made by the treaty on October 14, city council chose to make a motion to ask administration to bring back a report to potentially transfer lot 6.
City council also approved another motion to write a letter of support to the provincial government to transfer lot 4 to the treaty.
Depending on funding and approvals, construction for the potential project may not start until Q2 or Q3 of 2027.
