Housing starts down 40 per cent from 2017
Housing starts in Grande Prairie haven’t improved into the second half of 2018. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says construction started on 21 new homes in July, down more than 36 per cent from July 2017.
The 19 single family homes and two multi-unit buildings brought the total so far this year to 72, which is 40 per cent less than the 121 seen in the first seven months of 2017. That year was the second slowest in a decade for new home construction, following the slowest in 2016.
Grande Prairie has had the lowest housing starts of all urban communities in Alberta every month this year. Numbers were also down across Canada in July.
