Grande Prairie Forest Area under fire advisory

A fire advisory has been issued for the Grande Prairie Forest Area. That means the province won’t be issuing any fire permits for heavy fuels until more vegetation grows and the region gets a significant amount of rain.

People with active burn permits aren’t yet affected, but they’re asked to double check they are following the requirements. Small and safe campfires for cooking and warming are still allowed.

The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie region is currently high due to dry and windy conditions. Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke says grassy areas will become an extreme wildfire danger as they continue to dry out.

Anyone using an off-highway vehicle around dried grass is asked to be extremely careful and to make sure to remove any debris build up from hot spots on their machine. People with winter burn sites should also check them for smoke, flames, or smoldering debris.
