Neighbours lend a hand in South Patterson fire response

Neighbours have helped the victims of a house fire in more ways than one. The Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a fire in the South Patterson area early Friday evening.

The next door neighbours to the east of the duplex at 77 Avenue and 94A Street say they were working outside when they noticed smoke coming from the building and called 9-1-1. By the time firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from one half of the duplex. They were able to keep the flames to one room, and cleared smoke from the other unit.

No one was home at the time, but five people have been displaced by the fire. They were put up in hotel rooms overnight, thanks to the generosity of a neighbour. Grande Prairie & District Victim Services and the Red Cross had also been called in to help.

The cause of the blaze is now under investigation. The extent of the damage is unclear.
