Local curlers take silver at world championship

Team Gushue came up short in Sunday’s gold medal final at the world men’s curling championship. The Team Canada rink, which includes Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker as lead and Grande Prairie’s Tom Sallows as an alternate, fell 7-3 to Sweden’s Niklas Edin.

Brad Gushue beat Edin for his first gold last year, and had been looking to be only the fifth team ever to win back-to-back world titles. The St. John’s-based curler admits the loss is disappointing.

“It wasn’t our best effort, and Niklas and his team played great today,” says Gushue. “I guess the only positive thing to look at is that even if we had played a great game, they probably still would have won with how well they played. They were certainly the best team today.”

This is Edin’s third career world title. Team Gushue will next head to Toronto for the Grand Slam Players’ Championships.
