Suspicious vehicle stop uncovers loaded weapon

A loaded handgun is off the streets thanks to an observant officer. The Grande Prairie Crime Reduction Unit was on patrol Tuesday when they noticed a suspicious vehicle.

Officers pulled the vehicle over near 74 Avenue and Poplar Drive and after a search the driver and a passenger were taken into custody. During a search officers discovered a gun in the vehicle and ammunition.

A 21 year-old man from Edmonton and an 18 year-old man from Beaumont are now facing multiple charges. Charges include possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, unauthorized possession and unsafe storage of a firearm and possession of restricted firearm with ammunition without a licence. The 18 year-old Beaumont man is also facing charges of obstructing a police officer.

Both men have been released from custody and are due to appear in court March 21 in Grande Prairie. Anyone with information is asked to contract RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
