UPDATE: Natural gas leak fixed in Sexsmith

UPDATE: Just after 9 o’clock Saturday residents were allowed back into their homes. Fire Chief Trevor Grant says the leak has been stopped and homes have been checked to ensure they are safe. Local roads in Sexsmith have reopened to traffic.

Ten homes in Sexsmith have been evacuated due to a natural gas leak. ATCO Gas and fire departments from Clairmont and Sexsmith responded to the alley near 99 Street and 101 Avenue around 3 p.m.

The nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and the area has been isolated. A temporary reception centre has been set up at the Sexsmith fire hall.

The public is asked to avoid the area and roads have been blocked off. 99 Street is closed between 100 Avenue and 101 Avenue, 100 Street is closed between 100 Avenue and 101 Avenue, and 101 Avenue is closed between 98 Street and 100 Street.
