Storm alumni NHL matchup thwarted by injury

A day before he was expected to face Grande Prairie’s Tanner Fritz in an NHL game for the first time, Carter Rowney is out with an upper body injury. Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed Thursday morning the Sexsmith product will be off the roster for at least four weeks.

Fellow Grande Prairie Storm alumni Fritz was recalled by the New York Islanders for his first ever NHL game on Tuesday, during which he spent more than 11 minutes on ice. The Islanders were set to face the Pens Friday night, but local fans will have to wait until the two teams next meet on March 3rd for a potential showdown.

Rowney and Fritz played together on the Storm in the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons, and won the AJHL championship in 2009. Rowney previously missed 14 games this season with a hand injury.
