Charles Spencer High will be home of the Mavericks

When the new Charles Spencer High School opens in Grande Prairie this fall, its students will be known as the Mavericks.

Principal Michelle Blair says the identity was one of the ones submitted online, and approved through staff and student focus groups.

“A Maverick is a risk taker. They’re innovate; they’re not afraid of change, and that just really resonated with us and connected with all the work we were doing with our community of learners.”

Blair adds that the name won’t just apply to their sports teams, but everyone at the school as well.

The school colours will be a steel blue grey, yellow and white, with a stylized “CS” logo.

However, Blair maintains the true character of the school will be formed over the next year.

“Everyone is coming new together, so we get to build a culture together. This isn’t just moving a pre-existing culture from one environment to a new one; we get to create this environment together and everybody gets to have a voice.”

930 students have registered so far.

Derek Taylor, Montrose and Alexander Forbes will all feed into it.
