Suncor can continue random drug testing

An Alberta court of appeals has upheld a decision Thursday which will allow Suncor to continue random drug and alcohol testing. The battle has been ongoing since the oil and gas giant introduced the testing in 2012. The process has included an arbitration panel, judicial review and multiple appeals.

Unifor, the union representing the workers, calls it a gross violation of their rights. The union vows to continue the fight, saying they will go to the Supreme Court of Canada if needed, but they remain committed to working with Suncor to create a policy.

Suncor says they have a comprehensive drug and alcohol policy already in effect. Unifor President Jerry Dias says they “know that random drug testing does not reduce accidents or improve safety.”
