908 school zone tickets handed out in first two weeks

More than 900 tickets were issued in school zones over the first two weeks of school, a number Enforcement Services says needs improvement. 876 of those tickets were for traffic safety offences, and another 29 for parking infractions.

“Most moving traffic violations are for speeding,” explains Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. “The reduction of speed in school zones is a priority because greater speeds equate to significantly higher pedestrian injury/fatality rates.”

Peace officers handed out those tickets between September 5th and 15th, and the city says they’ll continuing to focus on school zone safety. Active patrols will be done between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, when school zones are in effect.

The numbers are fairly consistent with what’s been seen in the city over the past few years. 2016 saw 408 tickets handed out in the first two days alone and the first two weeks of 2015’s school year brought 892 tickets. The first month of school in 2014 saw 1,117 infractions.
