No health risk from Crystal Lake smell

You may notice a smell in the Crystal Lake area but doesn’t pose any risk to the public. The city has investigated the scent, which is coming from the water and storm sewers.

Drainage and Environmental Supervisor Richard Sali says the smell is being caused by organic matter trapped at the bottom of the lake that is decaying. In the process, it makes a gas.

The decay usually happens during the spring thaw when the ice breaks.
