Syncrude restarts shipments from Mildred Lake upgrader after fire

Pipeline shipments from Syncrude’s Mildred Lake oilsands facility have restarted after a fire in March. The fire at Suncor’s base plant north of Fort McMurray broke out when a line failure caused an oil-based thinning agent to leak and spark flames on March 14th.

One worker was sent to hospital with serious injuries. The blaze burned for two days and production at the upgrader were shut down until this weekend when Syncrude finished repairs.

Right now production is around 140,000 barrels a day when capacity is 350,000. That should ramp back up for full rates in June.

Suncor is the majority owner of Syncrude Canada.
