Arrest made in 2014 fatal shooting outside Canadian Brewhouse

More than two and a half years after a man was shot and killed outside the Canadian Brewhouse in Grande Prairie, an arrest has been made. 35 year old Nicholas Richard Harris of Edmonton has been charged with the first degree murder of John William Rock.

The 28 year old Edmonton man was shot outside of the restaurant around 1 a.m. the morning of October 1, 2014. He had been a patron of the Canadian Brewhouse and was found in the parking lot severely injured. He later passed away in hospital.

At the time RCMP believed the shooting wasn’t random, and the Major Crimes Unit, Grande Prairie detachment and Edmonton Police Service have since been looking into the homicide. In August 2015, their investigation brought them to search for evidence in a storm pond a few minutes away from the bar, but nothing was turned up. Police wouldn’t specify what they were looking for, and have not said whether the gun involved in the shooting was ever found.

In addition to the murder count, Harris has also been charged with possession of a restricted firearm, possession of a restricted firearm without holding a subsisting license, and possession of a restricted firearm while prohibited. He will make his first appearance in court in Grande Prairie on May 15th. He remains in police custody.
