Hairstylists challenging others to go green

A local salon is challenging other hairstylists in the city to go a little more green in their workplaces. Stylist from the Headroom Laura Heck says they are part of an initiative with Green Circle Salons which guides them through ways to recycle hair clippings, aerosol cans and used foils.

“Across North America, we create over 40,000 lbs of waste a day in salons which is scary if it isn’t recycled. We throw hair away but it doesn’t break down and does create methane gas.”

Over 63,000 pounds of hair clippings are wasted that could be recycled. After the Fort McMurray wildfire, Heck says clippings were made into dog beds through Green Circle and sent to families in that city.

Stylists can attend an event to learn more on April 23rd. The Green Your Community Event is taking place at the Headroom from 1:00 pm to raise awareness about the program. They ask hair dressers to collect their hair clippings, aerosol cans, and chemically foils for the event.

Along with the Headroom, six other salons take part in the Grande Prairie area. Orange Blossom Salon in Grande Cache, HairCraft Eufora Concept Boutique, Rebel Noir Artistry, Art and Soul Hair Studio, Dye Hard Hair Design, and Strandz Styling are all part of the program as well.
