History of chuckwagons to be on display in Grande Prairie

A new exhibit honouring the history of chuckwagons will open this weekend at the Heritage Discovery Centre. Located in the lower level of Centre 2000, the display will take visitors through the development of wagons from field kitchens to races. Grande Prairie’s influence on the chuckwagon racing world will also be featured.

A grand opening ceremony will be held this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. with the first Stompede Queen Bernie Benson, then known as Stompede Sue. Her first costume is on display, and curator Charles Taws will be giving free guided tours.

This year marks the Stompede’s 40th anniversary. There will be activities and crafts for children, along with novelty cowboy hats for the first 50 people.
