Local women’s hockey legend passes away

A ambassador of women’s hockey in northern Alberta has passed away, Marjorie McAusland died Sunday at the age of 65. Better known as Marj, McAusland and her husband Darrel ran the Grovedale Arena for 22 years, all while helping her sons excel on ice.

According to Grande Prairie Hockey Legends, McAusland was the first woman to ever coach at a 1987 AA peewee tournament in Prince George. She also set up the first local girl’s hockey team in Grovedale, and was the assistant coach and then head coach for the gold medal winning women’s team at the 2000 and 2002 Arctic Winter Games.

A long list of her accomplishments can be found on the Grande Prairie Hockey Legends website. A celebration of life will be held on January 13th at the Entrec Centre.
