ATV helmet law proposed for Alberta public land

If a new law is passed, helmets will have to be worn by anyone using an ATV, snowmobile or dirt bike on public land. The provincial government has proposed the move, after a survey done this fall found 65 per cent of Albertans think helmets should be mandatory for everyone riding an off-highway vehicle.

People doing farming and ranch work would be exempt, along with anyone quadding on private property and First Nations reserves. 185 people were killed riding ATVs in Alberta between 2002 and 2013, and almost 80 per cent of those weren’t wearing helmets.

The County of Grande Prairie brought in its own helmet bylaw for roads in the region in August 2015.
