Province banning door-to-door energy sales

The province is banning the sale of energy products door-to-door. The government says it’s received more than a thousand complaints, many of which came from seniors and families who felt tricked into buying things like furnaces and water heaters on the spot. In some cases, salespeople were coming to their home two to three times a day.

The ban will cover the door-to-door sales of furnaces, water heaters, windows, and air conditioners, along with energy audits and natural gas and electricity contracts. Energy companies will still be able to sell to Albertans over the phone, online, through kiosks, and advertising. The ban will come into effect on January 1, 2017.
