Alberta to buck trend of fewer housing starts: CMHC

Alberta is the only prairie province projected to have an increase in housing starts this year.

According to the latest figures released by Canada Mortgage and Housing, our province will see an almost four per cent increase in new home construction this year, with 37,400 units projected to be built in 2014.

By comparison, housing starts are projected to decrease by over nine per cent in Saskatchewan this year, and almost 19 per cent in Manitoba.

Housing sales across Alberta are also projected to increase by almost 3.5 per cent this year to 68,500 transactions.

With that will come an increase in the average sale price in the province, which is expected to jump just over $15,000 to $396,000.
