Northern Gateway won’t appeal court ruling against pipeline

Northern Gateway will not be appealing the Federal Court of Appeal decision that reversed Ottawa’s approval of the project. Its certificate was overturned in June, after the court found First Nations were not properly consulted and the federal government did not provide enough time for discussion.

Northern Gateway President John Carruthers says they “believe that meaningful consultation and collaboration, and not litigation, is the best path forward for everyone involved.” It plans to work with government and Aboriginal communities in a renewed consultation process.

The project to build a twin pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat, B.C. was given the green light by the federal government in June 2014. It was dependent on 209 conditions, including proper consultation.
