The Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a small fire at the Aquatera landfill Wednesday afternoon. The call came in around 5 p.m. and when firefighters arrived, they found a fire around 10 square feet in size.
Platoon chief Bart Johnson says dump fires typically pose a problem for fire crews, as they can sometimes be burning for hours, days, or even weeks under large piles of material before smoke starts to show. However, trucks were in an out in under an hour.
Johnson credits Aquatera with keeping a clean facility, saying he can’t remember any significant incidents over the past 15 years.
