Arrest of Peace River North MLA prompts appointment of special prosecutor

An MLA from northeastern B.C. has been arrested, prompting the province to appoint him a special prosecutor. Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm announced Tuesday he was leaving his party’s caucus over unspecified allegations.

In a release, the B.C. Criminal Justice Branch says the assignment of the special prosecutor is meant to “avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of criminal justice.” So far, no charges have been laid against Pimm, and the nature of his arrest is not publicly known.

This isn’t the first time Pimm has been in this position. A special prosecutor decided in 2011 that he wouldn’t face any charges stemming from a domestic incident involving his wife.
