Important weekend ahead for Grande Prairie-born Olympic athletes

Grande Prairie-born volleyball player Gavin Schmitt had nine points for the Team Canada as the men’s squad dropped their second game in a row at the Rio Olympics. They’re now in a must-win situation this weekend, with a 1-and-2 record so far.

They’re currently in fourth in pool A, and will face Mexico Saturday. The preliminary round wraps up Monday with another crucial game against Italy.

Also born in Grande Prairie, Nikola Girke and her partner Luke Ramsay sit 10th after two days of sailing in the mixed nacra 17 competition. They have their last six preliminary races set for Saturday and Sunday.

While both athletes originally hail from the Swan City, Schmitt calls Saskatoon home while Girke lives in West Vancouver.
