Only a dozen cats left to adopt at closing Grande Prairie SPCA

After only one day of its Empty the Shelter event, all 14 dogs at the Grande Prairie and District SPCA have been adopted out. 47 of 59 cats have also found home.

The SPCA is clearing out in anticipation of closing May 31st. Due to outstanding bills, the Canada Revenue Agency has frozen its accounts, making it impossible to pay staff. In total, 250-thousand dollars is needed to pay them back and cover other expenses in order to re-open the shelter.

Board president Laurie Fisher admits mismanagement of funds have gotten to this position, along with the City and County of Grande Prairie’s 2015 decision to take over management of the regional pound. The year before, both communities paid more than $530,000 to have them run it.
