State of Local Emergency lifted in M.D. of Greenview

A State of Local Emergency is no longer in effect for the MD of Greenview. Officials say the wildfire that was threatening the Little Smoky and Fox Creek areas is now being held. That means it’s not supposed to grow past its current boundaries.

It hasn’t grown in the past 48 hours and is still 657 hectares in size. The province says it’s also 95 per cent surrounded with a fire guard.

It started raining in the region last night and by 9 a.m. this morning there was already 13 millimetres on the ground. Rain is expected to continue, which is a welcome relief to firefighters.

The province says once the rain lightens, they’ll begin digging deep into the soil to try and fully extinguish the fire. Wildfire Information Officer Shannon Stambaugh says it’s hard work and takes a long time.

The north end of the fire is still eight kilometres southeast of Little Smoky and 11 kilometres north of Fox Creek. It’s not threatening any communities or critical infrastructure.
