Grande Prairie municipal property tax increase set at 2.25 per cent

The average household in Grande Prairie will be looking at paying an extra $144 in property taxes this year. The city’s portion is going up by 2.25 per cent, which works out to an extra $74 for an average property assessed at $360,600.

The increase was originally set to be 4.2 per cent, but city council asked staff to find ways to bring it down recognizing the strain residents are under with the economic downturn.

The part of the tax bill that the city doesn’t have control over is the province’s education levy. They’ve asked for almost an additional 10 per cent this year, but since the Swan City’s assessment base has grown, it will look more like an 8.5 per cent increase.
