Grande Prairie community sandbox open for winter use

If you need some sand to help get a grip on winter, the City of Grande Prairie’s community sandbox is open for the season.

Located on the west side of the City Service Centre, near the south end of 112 Street and outside the facility gates, the sandbox is available for residents to collect up to two five-gallon containers of sand per visit for personal use.

Residents are encouraged to use the sand on sidewalks and driveways to help reduce the risk of slips and falls during icy conditions.

Before heading to the sandbox, residents should bring their own shovel and buckets and take only what they need, up to two five-gallon buckets per visit. Sand is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The City will replenish the supply throughout the winter, but the sandbox may not always be full. No salt is intentionally added to the sand, although small amounts of salt or other impurities may be present.

The community sandbox was introduced following the 2022 Snow and Ice Service Review in response to resident feedback requesting easier access to sand for winter traction.
