Peace River Correctional Facility escapee’s arrest came after carjacking

Before he was taken into custody on Tuesday, a Peace River Correctional Institute prisoner led officers on a chase through Fort Nelson. Harley John Lay was broken out by an armed and masked man Monday while being transported to hospital.

The two made their way to B.C. with another woman where they were spotted getting gas on the Alaska Highway. An RCMP traffic stop failed to trap them, and a spike strip slowed them down but didn’t disable the vehicle.

The woman was arrested in the vehicle at a Subway restaurant, but the two men reportedly stole another pickup that was idling in a parking lot, with an infant in a car seat inside. Fortunately, the 16 year old driving it was able to get the baby out as he was being carjacked.

The vehicle was later ditched and the duo were arrested trying to steal another one. All three are now in custody with charges pending.
