Mounties urge drivers to think safety first as school zone slowdowns set to return

With students heading back to class, Grande Prairie RCMP is reminding drivers to get back into good driving habits and slow down in school zones.

RCMP Cpl. Matt Howell said drivers should slow down and remain aware when travelling through school zones, noting there may be more children outside, including young students who are still learning how to safely cross the road.

“It’s important to always be vigilant when you are going through these zones.”

Howell said drivers should not assume an area is safe to navigate once the school day ends, as children may still be nearby.

“People need to remember that even after school, there’s kids who are going to go to the park.”

Howell said drivers should make road safety a priority at all times.

“We’ve got to remember that the safety of our children is the most important, and we always need to keep that in mind whenever we are driving.”

Howell said local enforcement agencies, including the RCMP, Grande Prairie Police Service and peace officers, may be present in school zones to ensure drivers follow posted speed limits and do not pass school buses when they are not supposed to.

School zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days across Grande Prairie.
