Residential street sweeping kicks off on Monday

Residential street sweeping will kick off in several neighbourhoods across Grande Prairie on Monday.

The annual program removes sand, gravel and debris left behind after winter maintenance, helping keep neighbourhood streets clean and supporting the long-term maintenance of roads and storm drainage infrastructure.

The city said residential street sweeping follows the same neighbourhood rotation used for the residential snow clearing program. Neighbourhoods are generally scheduled to be swept the day before their regular waste collection day during their designated Week A or Week B rotation, although weather and operational conditions may affect the schedule.

Most neighbourhoods are swept at least twice during the season, with additional passes completed if needed.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said residents can help crews complete a more effective cleanup by moving vehicles off the street while sweepers are working.

“As crews move into residential neighbourhoods, residents can play an important role in helping the program succeed. Moving vehicles off the street while sweeping is underway gives crews better access to the curb line and helps them complete a more thorough clean-up. It’s a simple way we can work together to keep our neighbourhoods clean and welcoming.”

Residents are asked to move vehicles off the street between 7 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. while sweeping crews are working in their area and to give equipment operators enough space to work safely.

The city said street sweeping operations are weather dependent and neighbourhoods that are not completed during their scheduled rotation will be revisited during later passes.
