Local art gallery hits 10 year milestone

The Grant Berg Gallery is celebrating their 10 year anniversary during the month of May.

The gallery officially hit their 10 year mark on May 6, and gallery owner Grant Berg says when he opened the gallery a decade ago, the goal was to pick a job that he could do until he is 80.

Berg mentioned just like any local small business, they have had their challenges.

“I’m really happy that we have made it and we have adapted and overcame some of those challenges which every small business honestly has had to navigate through, but here we are.”

Berg added that one of those challenges was during the pandemic, at that time he had another gallery in Kananaskis. However, when things started to slowly open back up he lost his staff and friends nearby had to help him out, but sadly Berg had to make the decision to close it all together.

Berg says the Grande Prairie gallery features about 55 different artists, he added that roughly over half of those artists are from the Peace Region, and the other half are from across Canada. Berg mentioned that out of all the artists they feature, over half are female, which just came naturally berg says.

“We’ve had some exceptional artists come out of thus region.”

Berg talked about how having a gallery that features so many local artists have helped the artists advance their career. He says when they first opened they featured a local artist, and they are now have their work in galleries across western Canada.

He says he hears almost monthly from artists about how his gallery has helped them move forward in their career.

“It’s wonderful seeing these local artists that maybe didn’t get recognized elevating their art and I like to think that I’m apart of that story, and helped elevate.”

The gallery has free entry, and features about three to four paintings from each artist.
