Officials say persistent dry weather and elevated wildfire danger have led to a fire restriction for the City of Grande Prairie beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 9.
City officials said the restriction bans open burning, burn barrels, smudge fires and residential fire pits without a spark arrestor or screen. Wood campfires on public lands are also prohibited, while fireworks will require written authorization.
Fire Marshal Chris Renyk said the restriction is intended to reduce wildfire risk and protect the community.
“This restriction isn’t about limiting enjoyment—it’s about protecting our community,” Renyk said. “The more people talk about safe behavior and step in when they see risky activity, the safer we’ll all be. It starts with awareness and ends with action.”
Residents will still be allowed to use propane and natural gas barbecues, propane fire pits, charcoal briquette barbecues, indoor wood fireplaces and residential fire pits equipped with a spark arrestor or screen. Wood pellet smokers and open-flame oil devices, including tiki torches, are also permitted.
City officials warned fires can ignite easily and spread quickly in dry and windy conditions, with embers capable of travelling as far as two kilometres and starting new fires.
The city said the fire restriction will stay in effect until weather conditions improve and urged residents to follow fire safety guidelines to help prevent wildfires.
