The Clairmont RCMP is reminding the community to use caution when operating off-highway vehicles near railway tracks.
Mounties say that during spring conditions, the ground terrain could get muddy, which increases the odds of vehicles becoming stuck.
Mounties add that railway tracks and surrounding areas are not designed for recreational vehicle use, and that trains require a significant amount of time and distance to stop unexpectedly.
The RCMP encourages anyone who may operate an off-highway vehicle to avoid travelling on or near railway tracks and rail corridors, be aware of changing ground conditions that can lead to vehicles becoming stuck, plan routes in safe, designated areas away from rail infrastructure, and never attempt to cross tracks, except at designated crossings.
“Operating off-highway vehicles near railway tracks can quickly become dangerous, especially in unpredictable spring conditions,” says Staff Seargent Matthew Short. “We’re asking the public to make safe choices and stay clear of rail lines to prevent potentially serious incidents.”
Police are reminding that railway property is restricted, and trespassing can result in enforcement action, and staying clear of rail lines helps protect individuals.
