Kidney disease support group forming in Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie Kidney foundation will be hosting their first ever Kidney Connect on Thursday.

According to organizers, these sessions will allow locals in the community to come together and talk about their journey with kidney health that they have encountered themselves or knew a family or friend that struggled with kidney disease.

Community engagement manager for the foundation Krysta Gendreau says that there is no set amount of time for how long you can attend.”

“It’s a lonely journey to have by yourself. We are reaching out to people to come out and be with us, whether they want to come and talk for a few minutes, share a story, talk about something that worked for them, we are here to listen,” she said.

The first session is set to take place at the Grande Prairie Public Library, in the Rotary Community room, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Jan. 22.

Gendreau mentioned that they are currently looking for volunteers for these events. She said that if you have been impacted in anyway by kidney health, that they would love to have you.

“If you have a kind soul and you want to listen, we would love to train you on how to be a peer support volunteer.”

After the Thursday meeting, they will be hosting the Kidney Connects on; March 12, May 21, July 16, Sept. 17, and November 19th.

Organizers believe that this event is the first of it’s kind in the region.
