Applications are open for Camp F.I.R.E program

The City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Fire Department have opened up applications for their Camp F.I.R.E. program.

Camp F.I.R.E. is led by the GPFD, and allows young women aged 16 to 20 years-old the opportunity to experience fire service first-hand. They will be working together as a team, and be put in fire-like scenarios. Officials say that this is a great opportunity for participants to see the reality of firefighting.

Grande Prairie Fire Chief, Mark VanWerkhoven says the participants will be learning directly from local firefighters through the program.

“For many young women, Camp F.I.R.E. is their first chance to see what the fire service really involves. Learning directly from firefighters gives participants a better understanding of the role, build confidence and show participants that there is a place for them in this profession.”

The three-day program will be taking place from April 24th until the 26th. The program is free of charge, applications will be accepted until Feb. 28th.

Applications can be found on the city’s website.

No prior fire experience is needed to apply.
