An adult sized rock climbing wall will be returning to Grande Prairie fall 2026.
After roughly six years of local climbers loosing the climbing wall at the college, a new wall in the Keyera Place is set to get under construction around summer 2026, with hopes for the wall to be built by the fall.
The wall is planned to be built on the back wall of the Keyera Place, President of the Grande Prairie Climbing Association, Christopher Sherk Dart says the wall will reach the roof, and will be roughly 60 meters wide.
So far the city has given $420,000 for the project, with $200,000 coming from city council. The remaining $220,000 came from a city surplus that they allocated for the Alberta Winter Games.
The Climbing Association still has some more fundraising left to do, such as gathering money towards purchasing climbing equipment.
Sherk Dart thanks the city for making it possible to bring the sport back to Grande Prairie.
“I would like to thank the city for investing in both the space and the climbing community, and giving us the ability to bring the sport back to city, and to grow the community again.”
The city is anticipating to see a 90 per cent design completed in the new year, which could lead to more funding for the wall.
