Peace River disappointed by Carmon Creek cancellation

While there are concerns for the Town of Peace River after the nearby Carmon Creek oilsands project was halted by Royal Dutch Shell, there’s also a silver lining: the cancellation won’t affect renovations to the local airport, which were funded by the company.

Shell announced it was scrapping the thermal oilsands project Tuesday, saying there isn’t enough pipeline infrastructure to get the oil to global markets.  However, the town says it doesn’t believe the news shows a lack of faith in production and exploration in northwestern Alberta.

In a statement, Mayor Tom Tarpey says he and council are concerned about the effect it will have on residents who have worked hard developing the facility. He and council will be reaching out to federal and provincial authorities to show them how more infrastructure like pipelines, roads, railways, and bridges will support long-term industry development.
