Grande Prairie Athletics taking year off

The Grande Prairie Athletics will not be icing a team this season. According to post on the team’s Facebook page, too many players have left the city or moved on from playing.

The plan is to rebuild and join the North Peace Hockey League again next year. Earlier this fall, the Dawson Creek Canucks and the High Prairie Regals announced they were rejoining the league for 2015/2016 after a year’s hiatus.

Also in the NPHL are the Falher Pirates, the Grimshaw Huskies, the Manning Comets, and the Fort St. John Flyers, along with the Spirit River Rangers. The Lakeland Eagles and Hythe Mustangs both folded at the end of the 2013/2014 season with no apparent plans to return.

The regular season starts Saturday.
