Grande Prairie powerlifter first to compete at Parapan Am Games

Dylan Sparks is about to make history. The 17 year old from Grande Prairie will be the first ever Canadian powerlifter competing at the Parapan Am Games, and one of the youngest on Team Canada. He’s been training and competing in the sport for two and a half years, and has hopes of one day competing in the Paralympics.

“It’s a great sport and I’ve had a lot of fun with it. I’m pretty sure that Toronto is going to be a really fun experience and I just can’t wait to be there and see what it’s like and hopefully continue on with more competitions.”

Sparks was born with Spina Bifida and uses a wheelchair, and says the sport has helped him make friends and gain confidence. He knows he’ll be up against much more experienced athletes, and is looking forward to the experience.

“Going into the Pan Am Games, I know that there are athletes who’ve probably been competing for 10 years; it’s going to be really tough competing with these guys but it’s going to be fun.

Sparks already has one medal under his belt this year from the Americas Championships in April. He lifts Sunday morning.
