Use of force justified Grande Prairie officer-involved shooting: ASIRT

The police oversight body in Alberta has judged that two Grande Prairie RCMP officers did not engage in any unlawful or unreasonable conduct that would give rise to an offence following their involvement in a shooting in December 2018.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was called in after officers shot a man around 4 a.m. on December 4th. At the time, ASIRT said they were following a stolen GMC Sierra truck with two people inside in the area of 99 Street and 141 Avenue.

It’s alleged that the driver stopped the truck, put it in reverse, and sped into the front of a police cruiser, after which, ASIRT adds that there was a confrontation and shots were fired, and two sawed-off, long-barrelled guns were found at the scene.

A report released Thursday finds there is no evidence to support any belief that either of the officers engaged in any unlawful or unreasonable conduct. The summary conclusion reads that they were presented with a lethal threat, following the actions of the accused toward officers, including allegedly firing a shotgun
one of the officers multiple times.
