Lightning sparks two wildfires in Grande Prairie region

Lightning has sparked two new wildfires in the Grande Prairie region over the past day. One has already been turned over, but the other one west of Little Smoky is considered under control.

So far this season, there have been 42 fires in the GP Wildfire Management Area, burning almost 79 hectares of land. Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke reminds residents that this is the time of year that lightning fires occur, meaning it’s important to be extra careful when dealing with fire.

Never leave campfires unattended, and remember to check the weather before doing any burning. All firefighting resources are needed to fight natually occurring fires, not ones caused by humans.
