Kidney Foundation hoping residents will Share a Spare

0

The Kidney Foundation hopes its latest fundraising effort will be a strike.

The “Share a Spare”, according to regional Community Engagement Manager Krysta Gendreau, will allow for the foundation to do what they do best, and that’s eliminating the burden of kidney disease for those going through their own medical battles. She says as the need for those travelling becomes so much greater over time, they’re hoping to help bridge the gap for those going through long term treatment.

“What that means is support in real life. People come to us for financial assistance, we give out gift cards for groceries, gas, medication,” she says. “If they have appointments in Edmonton for treatment, they need money to get there, it’s a full time job being a kidney patient, and we need help to support them,”

Currently, there are three spots open for the 10-pin extravaganza, with the cost of a team of six member setting you back $400. But, if bowling is not your thing, they have non-bowler tickets available that gets you food and a drink.

The event takes place September 26th at Bowling Stones, and you cou can buy tickets or register a team on the Kidney Foundation website.

Hall says when it comes to fire season, whether you’re in the county or in the city, always be aware of your surroundings.

“Just being aware of the conditions, the weather and what’s going on out there, pay attention to the advisories.”

If you do find yourself safe in the wilderness and you come across a blaze or a small bush fire, experts advise you to immediately call 911 and to not put your self in danger.

“Call 911, get us going. Don’t try to put to your self in danger to put things out. Just make sure you know exactly where you are, and how we can get there, so we can start working on helping suppressing the fire.”

Fire restriction in place for the Grande Prairie region Friday

0

A fire restriction will be in place for the City and County of Grande Prairie as of 1 p.m. Friday.

According to city officials, the restriction is due to very dry conditions.

In the city while the restriction is in place, open burning of any kind, burn barrels, residential fire pits without a spark arrestor or screen, smudge fires, safe wood campfires on public lands and fireworks are not allowed without written authorization.

City of Grande Prairie Fire Department Fire Marshal, Chris Renyk, says the restriction is intended to prevent human-caused wildfires.

“We ask that all residents exercise caution and take proactive steps to help keep our community safe from wildfires,” Renyk says.

Propane and natural gas appliances, including barbecues and fire pits, charcoal briquette barbecues, wood pellet smokers, and open flame oil devices such as tiki torches, are allowed to be used during the restriction.

In the county no new fire permits will be issued while the restriction is in effect and only approved fire pits, burn barrels, or industrial bins can be used within proper enclosures.

According to County Fire Chief Trevor Grant, fires are much easier to start and spread in the current hot and dry conditions.

As well the community is being reminded when winds reach or are forecasted to be 12 kilometres per hour or higher burning is not permitted.

The fire restriction will be in place until conditions improve.

Volunteers needed for Rotary Community Food Bank Drive

0

The Rotary Community Food Bank Drive is looking for volunteers to help collect donations for the Grande Prairie Salvation Army Food Bank next month.

Chair for the Rotary Community Food Bank Drive, Lori Pollack, explains that the need for the food bank is not going down, with one in three people estimated to have used it. She adds fifty per cent of those benefiting from the food bank are children, and there are a number of seniors as well.

“The Salvation Army has been doing great work trying to help those in need, and the Rotary Clubs of Grand Prairie are coordinating with the community to try and help that go a little further,” Pollack says.

For the September 11th event, Pollack says they will need between 700 and 1,000 volunteers to go door-to-door canvassing. The volunteers will go around the community and collect non-perishable items such as canned fish or beans, canned fruits, canned vegetables, soups, and school snacks.

“Another thing that they’re always looking for is unopened personal hygiene items like toothbrushes, feminine products,” Pollack says. “They tell us that tough decisions are made every month between paying a bill and purchasing these necessary items.”

She adds it is ideal for volunteer groups to have five or six people so there is a driver and there are at least two people on each side of the road going door-to-door as the driver creeps down the street, and any donations can be put in the vehicle.

Along with the in-person collection, there will also be an online store on the food drives website.

“We did that because we thought it might be kind of fun to create a shopping experience. So you can go into the online store and you can pick out whatever food items, the equivalent of the dollar value, and then you can make your cash donation online through that website.”

The food drive collection will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on September 11th.
