Man Van is rolling into Grande Prairie this weekend

The Man Van will be back in Grande Prairie on Saturday.

The Man Van is a mobile men’s health clinic that travels around the province, providing the opportunity for men aged from 40 to 70 to get tested for early signs of prostate cancer for free.

Communications Supervisor Laura Barker says it’s vitally important for men in the age group to get tested.

“They just show up, and we’ll do the rest. It takes about 15 minutes, Its really quick and beneficial to be making sure you are staying on top of your health. If caught early it’s highly treatable.”

The health clinic on wheels will be doing more than just bloodwork, as they will also offer blood pressure, and mental health wellness screenings to any men that are over 18 years old.

The Man Van will be located at Centre 2000 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., there is no Alberta health care card required.

OHS investigating a fatal workplace incident in Grande Prairie

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is investigating a fatal workplace incident that took place in Grande Prairie on September 19th, 2025.

According to OHS, one worker died after being pinned by equipment that tipped over on the site. As the investigation is currently ongoing, no further information will be provided.

Deadline approaching for city backed scholarships

The City of Grande Prairie is taking applications for several different scholarships until the end of the month. Some of the grants available include the, Bob Nuefeld scholarship, come fly with me fund, and the Perky McCullough International Excellence Scholarship,

With each of these awards being worth over $1,000 each, and geared toward local athletes.

The city is also offering grants for community improvements as well, with grants valued up to $2,500.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton, says these programs will help the future of talent in the city.

“Through the Community Improvement and Pursuit of Excellence programs, we can provide residents with the tools to enhance our city, support local talent, and inspire future generations.”

Interested individuals and organizations can find details and application forms on their website.

The deadline to apply for all programs is October 1st, 2025.

Grande Prairie RCMP look for dashcam, security footage in alleged armed robbery

Grande Prairie RCMP is looking for dashcam or surveillance footage in connection to an alleged armed robbery that took place in the city early Monday morning.

Police say they got a call about an armed robbery was attempted at around 6:45 a.m. on 70 Avenue, between 88 Street and 90 Street. It’s believed a a man wearing a ski mask approached a woman while holding blunt weapon, and what was later described as an imitation firearm while attempting to a female victim.

The robbery was stopped after a nearby witness intervened, and the suspect fled the area on foot. Despite their best efforts, police, including the use of a K-9 unit, police were unable to track down those involved.

Anyone with video footage of the area, be it home security or dashcam, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., is asked to please review the footage and contact the RCMP if they are able to assist.

Two charged after allegedly striking, fleeing from police vehicle

Two people from Grande Prairie are facing numerous charges after allegedly fleeing from police near Hinton earlier this month.

Authorities say that on September 16th, officers located a vehicle that had been reported stolen at a residence within the Hinton area, and when they attempted to talk to the home-owners they received an un-related call about a firearm, shifting their attention elsewhere momentarily.

The two accused then allegedly ran out of the house and got into the stolen vehicle in an attempt to flee, but not before reportedly hitting police vehicle and wooded area.

Mounties say the vehicle was seen heading towards Grande Cache, and several units were able to get ahead to successfully deploy a tire deflation device before eventually arresting the two occupants.

A 38-year-old man and 37-year-old woman are facing a slew of charges including possession of property obtained by crime and obstruct police officer.

Peace Regional RCMP warns of public risk after amphetamines seized

Amphetamines allegedly seized from a vehicle in Dixonville have prompted a warning from Peace Regional RCMP.

Mounties say on September 18th they were on the lookout in the area for a suspicious vehicle that had been reported, when they happened upon a truck without a matching plate. Police say the vehicle was stolen from a residence in Mackenzie County in August.

Peace Regional RCMP say a search of the vehicle lead to the seizure of a number of items including approximately 487 grams of suspected Amphetamine in crystal form, 17.2 grams of suspected Amphetamine made to look like small pink, purple and blue beads and approximately 23.6 grams of suspected Amphetamine, in crystal form hidden inside of shotgun shells.

Mounties are asking you to remain vigilant you they find any items that look similar, especially given how some looks like beads one would use for crafts or that a child may play with unknowingly.

In addition to the alleged drugs, police also seized a gun, ammo, suspected bottles of GHB, a pile of tools, jewelry, watches and the truck itself.

Authorities suggest it’s likely more items are likely to be found with a more fulsome search of the vehicle, and they will be looking to locate the rightful owners of any items.

NWP to host an open house in early October

Northwestern Polytechnic will be hosting an open house on Saturday October 4th.

During this time you get the opportunity to learn about the programs that NWP offers, and you get a feeling of what the campus is like.

The meet spot will be located at the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre Concourse at the Grande Prairie campus.

The open house will run from 10am-3pm, and parking on campus will be free.

Inbound scale at Clairmont Centre for Waste Management to go under repairs

The County of Grande Prairie is notifying residents that the inbound scale at the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management will be closed temporarily, due to repairs.

The county is advising that all visitors will need to use the north/outbound scale for entry and exit, and that traffic control will be in place.

The county is asking the community to listen to signage and expect delays.

The closure will take place between the 23rd and 24th of September.

GirlZone returns for the 4th year

The City of Grande Prairie will be hosting their 4th annual GirlZone on Saturday, October 4th.

The event will allow girls from ages of 10-15 to try activities that they may have not been able to try before, while building confidence in a supportive setting.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton talked about what this event means to the community.

“GirlZone has become a highlight for many young people in our community. It’s about opening doors, sparking new interests and showing girls that their place in sport and recreation matters.”

Some of the activities the girls will get to participate in include dance, squash, soccer, volleyball and more.

Registration will set you back roughly $20 but includes lunch.

Storm, Downtown Association team up to light up city centre

The Grande Prairie DownTown Association and the Grande Prairie Storm announce a new partnership to light up the “CityCentre” sign during home games.

The sign will light up blue, yellow and grey representing the Storm’s team colors for every home game of the 2025-26 season.

Executive director of the team Nicole Menzies, talked about how excited both her and the team are to have this change.

“We are very excited to partner with the Downtown Association to have the City Centre sign lit up in Storm colours for each of our home games this season.”

Menzies also noted about how appreciated the team is to be playing in such a great location.

“We are very grateful to get to call Bonnetts Energy Centre our home rink, and that its a location that allows our fans access to incredible dining, shopping, and nightlife before and after the games. We look forward to continuing to be good friends and neighbours to the many businesses downtown and appreciate the support from the community.”

 

Lions Park new inclusive playground is now open to the community

The brand new inclusive playground in Lions Park is officially open to the community.

The playground was built with the intention of making everything accessible for kids in the community with special needs. It will feature equipment with wide ramps for wheelchairs to go on. It will also feature roller slides, the We-Go-Round and the Sway Fun Glider, which are all inclusive equipment.

Because of the equipment on the park kids with special needs can engage with the playground more than any other traditional park.

The playground was gifted by the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charity.

This will park will now be one of four inclusive parks in Grande Prairie.

A grand opening celebration for the park is planned for spring of 2026.

Get the chance to meet municipal candidates in early October

You will have a chance to meet some of the municipal candidates on Saturday October 4th.

The event is hosted by the Patterson Neighbourhood association, which will be held at Alexander Forbes Elementary School from 2-4pm.

During this time you will get to meet, and talk with the people who are running Grande Prairie’s future.

Get to steppin’ for a good cause this Saturday

The Grand Parade walk and fundraiser for the Grande Prairie & Area Council on aging will be taking place on Saturday September 20th.

The walk will be taking place at the Legion Field Track from 11am-2pm, with registration for the event starting at 10:30.

The money raised in the event will go to multiple of the programs that the council has to offer to seniors in the community.

According to the Executive director of the council Tyla Savard, says the number of baby-boomers in the community are expected to at least double over the next few years.

“The number of seniors we have in our community is growing, but over the next 3-4 years we’re going to see that number double if not triple.”

The charity is hoping to make this event an annual thing, as this year is their very first year having the walk.

Savard, is encouraging the community to come on out on Saturday and bring the energy.

Storm Brewin’: GP Storm set for Friday home opener

The Grande Prairie Storm are back in action at the Bonnetts Energy Centre on Friday September 19th against the Whitecourt Wolverines.

Not only will this be the Storm’s home opener, but it will be their first game of the season.

The team went to the Centennial Cup last season after they lost in the AJHL finals.

Storm Executive Director Nicole Menzies says the locker room has a lot of confidence going into Friday night.

“I think the guy’s have a pretty high expectation for themselves, I think everybody is really excited to get going Friday.”

During the AJHL finals last year, the Storm nearly sold-out each home game they played in. Menzies talked about how she is excited to see the community back in the rink.

“We want to thank everyone for the incredible support last season, and we’re looking forward to see everybody back in the building this Friday.”

The Storm finished last season 2nd in the North division, winning 30 out of 54 regular season games.

The Storm should feel comfortable opening their season against Whitecourt, as they swept them in the playoffs last year 4-0.

This will be the only home game the Storm will play in September.

Beaverlodge Hospital Emergency Department temporarily closed Thursday

The Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital Emergency Department will be temporarily closed on Thursday due to a lack of clinical personnel.

According to Alberta Health Services, the ED will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., however, nursing staff will remain on-site in the emergency department providing triage, assessments, and referrals for patients to alternate emergency departments in neighbouring communities.

Anyone who experiences an emergency is asked to call 911.

Depending on their needs, patients should remain aware of services available through local pharmacies by calling Health Link at 811, available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions.

GPPL launches new inclusive collection

The Grande Prairie Public Library has released a brand new collection of books and toys modified for kids with special needs.

The idea for the collection started when a parent came into the library expressing that there is not a lot of options for books and resources in Grande Prairie for their special needs child. The library began researching for resources, and came across TikTok’s of a mom who adapted books for her autistic son.

The new collection toys and sensory items, and modified books, which include additions like page fluffers, and gems attached to page corners to help kids get a better grip on the page and easier for them to turn it over.

In this collection, you will find switch-adapted toys, these toys are battery-operated and have been wired to connect to a switch, that helps kids with fine motor difficulties or limb differences.

GPPL Children Programmer Emily Rempel is thrilled they’re able to provide a collection and materials for as large a group of people as they can.

“Being able to bridge the gap from the library to people with disabilities has been really awesome.”

 

This collection is available to anybody in Grande Prairie who may want to borrow these items. You can expect to see this collection grow in the future.

The collection was released on September 10th 2025.

Grande Prairie Fire Department receives $50K donation from FireHouse Subs

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada, recently donated over $50,000 to the Grande Prairie Fire Department, in a cheque presentation hosted Tuesday September 16th at Firehouse Subs.
The $51,997 will be used for “turnout gear,” which is what firefighters use to help protect them during dangerous encounters that they have on shift, the gear helps protect the firefighters from flames, heat and more.
Grande Prairie Fire Chief Mark Vanwerkhoven, mentioned about how important both the donation and gear is for the department.
“This is significant, this 50 thousand dollars from the Firehouse Charitable Foundation will allow us to purchase 9 sets of turnout gear.”
“Turnout gear is our life safety gear.”
The timing of this grant could not have been better, as the GPFD is expecting to fill 4 new positions in the department, meaning that the brand new turnout gear will be used as soon as possible
Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says about how this donation reflects Grande Prairie as a community.
“This grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada reflects the generous and innovative spirit of Grande Prairie and how we are stronger together. The City is thankful for this significant contribution towards community safety.”
This donation is expected to go a long way in both the fire department and the community.

Artist wanted to paint new life into Legion building

The Grande Prairie Legion Branch #54 is in search of an artist to paint a mural on their building next spring.
Branch President Dean Langton say they are currently taking applications for the project, with interested artists from as far away from Yellowknife, with others comings from places like Calgary, as well as several from Grande Prairie.
He  says they’re looking for something that represents both the past and the present, and are hoping a local artist can bring that to life.
Langton adds they are looking for an idea that would involve all 4 services in the mural, that being the RCMP, Army, Navy, and the Air Force.
Officials have yet to decide on a budget for the project, but the goal is to have the mural completely painted by mid spring of 2026.
The last day to submit an application is September 20th.

Serious collision closes 108 Avenue, 101 Street intersection

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area as the Grande Prairie RCMP are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision at the corner of 108 Avenue and 101 Street.

The intersection will be closed until further notice while emergency crews respond and an investigation is conducted. Police will provide an update when the intersection is reopen, no other details have been released at this time.

Saddle Hills County Health Clinic facing lengthy closure

The Saddle Hills County Health Clinic will be temporarily closed for upwards of 18 months.

The news comes after it was announced that the current Nurse Practitioner will be commencing maternity leave in October of this year, and while recruitment efforts remain ongoing, no cover has been attained.

County officials say clinic patients are advised to begin arranging alternative care through their primary care providers, if available. Alternatively, patients may utilize walk-in clinics or
virtual care services, or visit the emergency room for more urgent concerns.

Officials say existing patients have been provided with prescription refills, where appropriate, to cover them for a reasonable period, until alternative care can be arranged. As of today, the clinic will temporarily cease operations from October 25th, but updates will be made available if the situation changes.
