With the 2014 Tour of Alberta recently wrapped up, organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s cycling race, which will be kicking off in Grande Prairie.
The race will spend it’s first two days in our region.
Executive Director Duane Vienneau says things will get started in the city with the time trials.
“Cyclists go out on the course starting every minute, on the minute, all 120 of them. They race against the time, and ultimately the fastest time wins the yellow jersey for the following day and start the next stage as a leader.”
The second day of racing will be held out in the County of Grande Prairie.
Vienneau says they have yet to choose which other Alberta communities will be a part of the tour next year.
“We’ll start to work on different routes, and we work with communities. We’ll start to look at how we’ll get to where we are going to go, and then we have rules from our governing body UCI that we have to meet. It’s a pretty long process.”
It was announced earlier this year that Grande Prairie would be one of the 2015 host cities, but organizers had not yet decided where the city would fall within the tour.
The Tour of Alberta hosts around 120 cycling racers from 20 countries around the world.
