Aquatera urges proper battery recycling techniques to avoid potential “zombie battery” apocalypse

Halloween is a time for ghouls, goblins, vampires, and other monsters, but every year Aquatera encourages residents to watch out for zombies… or zombie batteries.

Aquatera explains that much like the undead, batteries can be improperly thrown out when they appear to have lost their usefulness and can sometimes come back to life with some potentially serious effects.

Officials say zombie batteries can be an explosive problem, causing fires at waste and recycling sites as a result of being subjected to water, excessive heat, or crushing and puncturing during waste processing.

In an effort to curb the potential apocalypse of undead batteries, Aquatera asks that before getting rid of old batteries, residents should take care to ensure they do so in the safest way possible.

Aquatera suggests separating batteries from other garbage and avoiding the discarding of old batteries in curbside collection bins are just a few steps to take to ensure no fires spark up in the landfill. Instead, residents are asked to dispose of batteries at special battery recycling services such as the Aquatera Eco Centre.
