The Grande Prairie RCMP are bringing awareness to a pair of programs that police are using to help police the community.
The first of the two is the RCMP’s Online Crime Reporting website, which allows residents to report non-emergent crimes to online; once a crime is reported, a police officer will contact the complainant within five days. Most crimes worth less than $5,000 can be reported through the website, including your property being vandalized or having an item stolen or lost. According to police, the program cannot be used to report a crime if there is a witness or suspect or if the theft includes personal identification, guns or license plates.
The Grande Prairie CAPTURE Program has residents register their security camera’s, allowing officers access to their contact information in the case they need to review camera recordings in the area to help with an investigation.
“Security cameras are an excellent crime prevention tool, protecting not only your own property but potentially your neighbour’s property as well.”
According to Mounties, the personal information of those who register their security cameras will be kept confidential. Police emphasize the program is entirely voluntary and police have no remote access to participants’ video feeds.
